Course Overview

All workplaces have a legal obligation to ensure their environment is safe when it comes to fire risks. Ultimately that comes down to ensuring your team have the required knowledge and understanding around fire safety. The Level 2 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety (RQF) is aimed at anyone involved in the management of fire safety and is based in an area where fire is a risk.

Learners gaining this qualification will understand that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone, and will recognise the causes of fire, common hazards and fire risk assessments. It can support those already in a workplace role or learners preparing for employment. Topics covered:

  • Hazards and risks
  • The control of fire risk
  • Principles and practice of fire safety management at work
  • The role of the nominated fire warden

Outline

First Safety Level 2

Module 1: Causes

  • Arson,
  • Electrical

Module 2: Components

  • 3 elements, what each do and how to extinguish by removing 1.

Module 3: Hazards –

  • Fire – burning, further fires, structural weakness.
  • Smoke – inhalation, visual, smoke damage, smoke carrying potential ignition.

Module 4: Spread

  • Radiation, convection, conduction direct burning.

Module 5: Fire risk assessment

  • Refer to the 5 Steps to Fire Risk Assessment.

Module 6: Reduce the likelihood

  • Complete, review and update fire risk assessments.
  • Good housekeeping, fire detection, employee training.

Module 7: Elements

  • Signage,
  • Route
  • Refuge
  • Assembly point.

Module 8: Types

  • Portable – water, Co2 etc.
  • Fixed – sprinklers, risers, etc.

Module 9: Duties

  • Providing a fire risk assessment
  • Good housekeeping
  • Emergency procedures in place
  • Regular training
  • Drills etc.
  • Fire safety inspections.

Fire Safety Level 2

  • Exam time: 45 minutes
  • Multiple-choice style: 20 questions
  • Pass mark: (12/20) 60% or more
