Employers also saw value – the certification verified that a candidate has fundamental tech literacy and problem-solving skills. Why Did CompTIA Rebrand ITF+ to Tech+?

The name “Tech+” reflects a broader scope beyond just “IT fundamentals.” So, why the change? CompTIA Tech+ (exam code FC0-U71) covers all the original ITF+ basics and adds more practical skills and up-to-date topics. CompTIA recognised that digital literacy is now essential not only for IT professionals, but for many roles in our tech-driven world. They rebranded to Tech+ to emphasise a modern, hands-on approach to foundational tech knowledge. According to CompTIA, the shift from ITF+ to Tech+ was driven by a commitment to keep training content current with industry developments and maintain the certification’s relevance. In other words, Tech+ is designed to ensure newcomers learn the latest in tech fundamentals including areas that barely existed when ITF+ first launched.
Importantly, if you already earned ITF+, your certification remains valid for life (both ITF+ and Tech+ are good for life with no renewal required). But going forward, Tech+ will be the new standard for foundational IT certification. The new exam went live in August 2024, and anyone just starting out would be wise to pursue the Tech+ course offered by NILC for the most up-to-date learning experience.
What’s New in CompTIA Tech+? (Syllabus, Exam Format & Skills)
CompTIA Tech+ covers everything ITF+ did – and then some. It still teaches core concepts in computing, infrastructure, software, databases, and security, but with deeper dives and more hands-on focus.
