How to use ChatGPT Tasks to Automate Actions and Set Reminders

How To Use the ChatGPT Tasks Feature To Automate Actions and Set Reminders

27 January 2025 - Produced by Jonathan Pollinger

OpenAI has introduced an exciting new feature for ChatGPT called Tasks, which allows users to automate and schedule activities ChatGPT can perform, making daily workflows more efficient. Currently available in beta, this innovative tool is accessible to subscribers of the Plus, Pro, and Teams plans, with plans to roll it out to free users in the coming months. While it’s still in beta and may have some glitches, Tasks offers a significant upgrade in functionality for users who rely on ChatGPT for daily assistance, such as scheduling automated reminders for client meetings or generating daily performance reports for team projects.

What Can You Do with Tasks?

The Tasks feature allows users to:

  1. Set Basic Reminders: For instance, businesses can schedule reminders for quarterly financial report deadlines or team meeting follow-ups.
  2. Automate Regular Tasks: More compellingly, Tasks can automate activities ChatGPT would usually perform, scheduled on a one-off or recurring basis. This eliminates the need to repeatedly input prompts for tasks you perform regularly.

How to Use Tasks

Currently, the feature is limited to ChatGPT-4 with scheduled task functionality. To set a task:

  1. Navigate to the Tasks section in ChatGPT-4.
  2. Define your task. For example: “Every day at 2:00 PM, create a summary of the day’s UK business news,” or “Generate a list of creative writing prompts every Monday morning.”
  3. Once set, ChatGPT will handle the task as scheduled. You can manage these tasks via the dedicated Tasks menu, where options to edit, pause, or delete are available.

Examples of Tasks

Here are some ideas to inspire you:

Managing Tasks

All scheduled tasks are displayed under Settings in a convenient list, where you can:

Notifications and Settings

Tasks notifications can be set to push or email. While push notifications may have some inconsistencies, email notifications work seamlessly, ensuring you stay informed about completed tasks.

Limitations

Currently, users can set up to 10 tasks. It would be helpful to know if OpenAI plans to increase this limit in the future to cater to heavy users, as this could enhance its usability for larger-scale workflows. While the limit may feel restrictive for heavy users, it’s still a powerful tool for automating repetitive activities and increasing efficiency.

Why Use Tasks?

Tasks is a game-changer for individuals and businesses looking to save time and streamline operations. Whether you need daily news updates, recurring reminders, or automated reports, this feature takes the hassle out of repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on what matters most.
