At NILC, we provide comprehensive PRINCE2® training to help individuals and teams manage projects effectively, from structured initiation through to successful delivery.

What Is PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a flexible, scalable project management methodology used across industries worldwide. As a best practice framework, it offers a clearly defined structure built around seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes.

Designed for project managers, delivery teams, and decision-makers, PRINCE2® supports communication, accountability, and control at every stage of a project. Its flexibility allows it to be applied in public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.

The 7 PRINCE2® Principles

PRINCE2® is built on seven core principles that define the underlying philosophy of the method:

  1. Continued business justification
  2. Learn from experience
  3. Defined roles and responsibilities
  4. Manage by stages
  5. Manage by exception
  6. Focus on products
  7. Tailor to suit the project environment

The 7 PRINCE2® Themes

Themes guide how the principles should be applied throughout the lifecycle of a project:

  1. Business Case – Ensuring the project delivers value.
  2. Organisation – Defining project roles and responsibilities.
  3. Quality – Specifying what the project must deliver.
  4. Plans – Detailing how objectives will be met.
  5. Risk – Identifying, assessing, and managing uncertainty.
  6. Change – Managing scope and responding to issues.
  7. Progress – Monitoring and evaluating project performance.

The 7 PRINCE2® Processes

Processes provide a step-by-step guide to managing a project from start to finish:

  1. Starting up a project
  2. Initiating a project
  3. Directing a project
  4. Controlling a stage
  5. Managing product delivery
  6. Managing stage boundaries
  7. Closing a project

PRINCE2® Qualifications

There are two core PRINCE2® certifications: Foundation and Practitioner. A third option, PRINCE2® Agile, is ideal for professionals who want to combine the responsiveness of Agile with the structure of PRINCE2®. Unlike traditional PRINCE2® courses, PRINCE2® Agile focuses on iterative delivery, collaboration, and adapting to change while maintaining project governance. Learn more in our What’s New in PRINCE2® Agile? blog post.

PRINCE2® Foundation

The PRINCE2® Foundation course introduces the principles, terminology, and structure of PRINCE2®. It’s ideal for those new to project management or looking to formalise their understanding.

Exam Format:

PRINCE2® Practitioner

The PRINCE2® Practitioner course builds on the Foundation and focuses on applying the methodology in real-world scenarios. It’s aimed at project managers and leaders seeking hands-on implementation skills.

Exam Format:

In 2025, the PRINCE2® Practitioner exam puts greater emphasis on practical application. Candidates must assess project situations, propose appropriate actions using PRINCE2® principles, and justify decisions in realistic project settings. This includes evaluating risk strategies, adapting plans, and tailoring the method to suit specific environments.
